‘ROVER’
‘ROVER’ Reduction Linoleum Cut Print
For this project, I wanted to go back to something that has been burning in my mind. Something I have played with on and off for years: Reduction Lino-printing. Offering a limited edition piece of art is great, HOWEVER, once the final print is made that means the tool (the lino block) that created the prints is destroyed. I think that is pretty cool and makes these pieces of art truly limited....
What is Reduction Lino-printing?
First, I start with a block of linoleum (like the linoleum on the kitchen floor). I carve my image into the block of linoleum and roll ink onto it. The ink is then transferred to a sheet of paper.
STEP ONE: After creating the original piece of art, I draw the image a second time as a reverse line drawing. I then transfer the image on to the linoleum. It is reversed so when the ink is transferred (pulled) it will look just like the original art piece.
STEP TWO, THREE, FOUR: Once the artwork is on the linoleum, the carving begins! I start by working backwards. I carve away the areas that I DO NOT want the color from the print to fall on to the paper. I do this one colour at a time. Upon completion of the first colour, I then go back to the block and carve out the areas where I want the first colour to remain in the final image. I then repeat this process of gouging away more and more material, print a colour etc... until each colour has been successfully printed....
AND DONE...the prints are done and ready for a new home...in your home!
